International Peacemaker Visits Pendleton.

The Rev. Delia Leal from Guatemala is the regional coordinator for the Women’s Ministry program in Mexico and Central America with the Protestant Center for Pastoral Studies in Central America (CEDEPCA). She focuses on female empowerment and income inequality there.

“The challenges in Guatemala are to give hope during despair. The country is in a lamentable situation, the government has poorly enforced laws so it wears people down. Despite that, we need to build spaces of justice and peace for everyone. I hope that people feel encouraged and enthusiastic about the work and the support that PC(USA) provides, and bear witness to what it does in our region. PC(USA) teaches that Christian faith brings about changes for people in the here and now, not just in the afterlife in heaven.”

Rev. Leal and her translator, Leslie Vogel will speak on Sunday afternoon, October 8 at 4pm in the Rogers Room at First Presbyterian Church. Following the presentations, a Guatemalan dinner will be served by women of the church. Donations will be accepted.

Talking About Dying Workshop

Monday, October 9th at 7:00 pm

Rogers Fellowship Hall

Death is part of the human experience; all of us have experienced loss, and all of us will die one day. Yet conversations about death and dying are difficult and often avoided even with our closest family members and friends.

This is the focus of “Talking about Dying,” a free conversation with facilitator Holly Pruett on Monday, October 9, 2017 at 7 PM at First Presbyterian Church Pendleton, 201 SW Dorion Ave, Pendleton, OR. This program is hosted by First Presbyterian Church Pendleton and sponsored by Oregon Humanities.

Talking about Dying discussions provide Oregonians with an opportunity to reflect on what stories and influences shape their thinking about death and dying and to hear different perspectives and ideas from fellow community members. Participants will explore essential questions: What do we think about when we think of dying? As people we’ve known have moved closer to death, what seemed to work well for them and the people close to them? What seemed difficult? When we think about our own dying, what do we want most?

Participants will come away from this conversation with a strengthened sense of community support and collective engagement around these questions, as well as a resource list with tools and information to help them consider how to shape a meaningful approach to death and dying. These conversations will be facilitated by trained professionals working in the fields of chaplaincy, counseling, gerontology, facilitation, and hospice care. For more information about this free community discussion, please contact First Presbyterian Church Pendleton at 541-276-7681.

Talking about Dying discussions are made possible thanks to the generous support of the WRG Foundation Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation.
