Interim Pastor - Kathy Keener

Mary Poppins flew into worship on Sunday, February 19. Our new interim pastor, Rev. Kathy Keener, sees herself as the Presbyterian Mary Poppins. She explains, “The Hebrew word for wind also means Holy Spirit. Mary Poppins is blown in by the wind/Spirit where she is needed. She leads children and adults to sing songs, play games and get the house in order. They fly kites, renew relationships, and learn what is truly meaningful as they explore the city around and the faith within them. “

Rev. Keener, who prefers to be called “Kathy” or “Pastor Kathy” was born in Boise and raised in Eugene, a member of Central Presbyterian Church. She graduated from University of Portland with an interdisciplinary degree in political science, peace studies and German, then served the Presbyterian church as a Volunteer in Mission (VIM) at Ghost Ranch and in Abiquiu, New Mexico (where she got her first cowboy hat!) She attended McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago and during summers did her clinical pastoral education in chaplaincy at Boise’s St. Alphonsus Hospital and ran a lake ministry on Lake Lewis and Clark on the border of Nebraska and South Dakota. Following seminary, she was a Financial Aid administrator at Notre Dame while her husband did doctoral course work.

Kathy was ordained in rural Illinois at Au Sable Grove/Yorkville and served there as pastor for six years. The presbytery encouraged her to attend Interim Training and she came back enthused about this niche of ministry. This is the twelfth church she has served as interim pastor. They have ranged from 35 to 1200 members in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Oregon. Kathy loves seeing new life emerge from chaos.

Kathy’s daughter, Deb, lives in Bend. Her parents live in Eugene and Tucson for a half the year each. Her brother is in Springfield and her sister is in Chico, California. Kathy enjoys visual and tactile arts, music and gardening. She listens to National Public Radio to keep up on news of the world. She has a roommate, Linnea Jones, whose dog, Bodie, is best friends with Kathy’s dog Milo.

Office Manager - Alison Moses

Hired in October 2018 with degrees in Library Science and Theology, Alison is a welcoming presence in the office at First Presbyterian.  She has lived all over the US and enjoys frequent visits to see family around the Northwest.  Her husband Warren has deep roots in the Pendleton area, which is part of their decision to settle down here to raise their 4 children in proximity to grandparents and cousins.  Alison comes from a family of church leaders and builders on both sides, people who value fellowship and mutual support.  These values drive Alison's service and love for the Pendleton First Presbyterian congregation and the community in and around Pendleton.
